How to take Accutane?

I understand that you should take accutane tablets with the fattiest and Highest calorie meal per day to promote max absorption. I don’t often eat typically high fat foods but I do take an blackmores omega 3 supplement after breakfast each day. I’m wondering whether any breakfast (usually eggs and toast or a fruit smoothie) + the omega 3 supplement will do the same as a ‘fatty meal/food’ in facilitating max absorption? Or should I just try to incorporate a high fat meal once per day instead?

Thanks for your interesting question.  While it is true that taking accutane with fatty foods increases the absorption and makes it more effective, you don't have to increase the overall amount of fat in your diet unless you want to.  It will still work with any kinds of foods, but studies revealed a few years ago that fat makes the medication quite a bit more effective.  Don't stress if adding fat makes you anxious.  It might mean a slightly longer course of medication to get the full effects, but your dermatologist will help you with the overall plan.  Please see an expert, and best of luck.

It would be recommended that you report back to the plastic surgeon or dermatologist who prescribed your Accutane for instructions. These instructions and details can vary greatly between patients so it is always best to double check with the Doctor who has prescribed this medication to you.

Thank you for your question. There are certain brands of isotretinoin (Accutane) that have the fatty molecules built into the medication, so taking the medication with fatty meals is not necessary. I highly recommend you consult with your dermatologist regarding different brands of isotretinoin. Take care and good luck.
