My dentist thinks that there may be a cavity at the far back of my wisdom tooth, and that I should get the tooth removed. The thing is, though, is that my wisdom teeth have grown in correctly, and have helped me out a bit ( I remember a good part of my childhood hating chips as they used to stab my back gums before I grew the teeth in ). I was wondering if it was an option to get the tooth removed and instead get a permanent one? Is that possible? - Would a dentist even DO that?

Answer: Replacement of a wisdom tooth I get this question all the time. The answer is that it is surgically and prosthetically possible to replace a wisdom tooth, however, is it needed. Most people function well with two or even one molar, the third molar (wisdom) is really not necessary for optimal function. There is a higher degree of complications both surgical and post surgical with replacing a tooth that far back in the upper and lower jaws. The bone quality in the upper jaw is worse in the back then in the front and on the lower jaw the nerve comes up higher the farther back we go. Also the forces of the bite are stronger the further back we go in the jaw and therefore there is a higher chance something will break, get damaged on the crown or implant connections.Usually we do not recommend the replacement of wisdom teeth because the risks outweigh the benefits.
