Severe swelling after IPL treatment

Question

I got an Ipl treatment for rosacea done on Wednesday, this is my second. I have been really swollen ever since...My cheeks are really big...I am icing every two hours and nothing has changed...I am starting to panic that the inflammation will never go away

Hi BigSam,Thank you for your question, but sorry to hear you are having a hard time. Swelling is very common after IPL, especially in the cheeks, and especially for patients with rosacea. No need to panic. However, I would still contact your provider so they can take a look and let you know if there is anything they would recommend to help speed up the process.

Swelling is very common for up to two weeks after IPL.  If you are concerned speak to your physician for after care. With rosacea, I recommend combining lasers with microneedling/prp for best results. Best, Dr. Emer.

It is best to return to the clinic that performed the treatments for an in person evaluation. It is possible that you will be started on a course of steroids to assist with the swelling. You can also continue to ice and sleep on a few pillows to elevate your head above the level of your heart while you sleep. Be patient and the inflammation will improve.

IPL is a great treatment for facial rejuvenation. It also works well for rosacea. It is difficult to make an  assessment without photographs. However swelling is normal after a treatment. I recommend that my patients apply cold compresses and sleep on an extra pillow if possible to reduce swelling. Please consult with a doctor for specific recommendations. Good luck!

Swelling is a common side-effect after an IPL treatment. However, if swelling does not subside or you are starting to feel discomfort, contact your provider for instructions. They may have some tips to help quicken the healing process. Good Luck!
