Depending on the microneedling device itself, the needles can penetrate up to about 3mm. This is deep enough to reach beyond the epidermal layer and get to the deeper skin structure layers and cause micro-damage which in turn promotes wound healing and improves the appearance of skin in many ways. The needles are not designed to reach anywhere close to the structures below the subcutaneous tissue, such as ligaments, tendons, bones, etc. The main concern overall regarding having hardware (plates and screws) in your body is preventing it from ever becoming infected. This can be caused by bacteria seeding from another procedure or wound into your blood stream and causing an infection where the hardware exists. This is rare, however, patients may be given the recommendation to take antibiotics prophylactically when having an invasive procedure.
