Hi, I’m already three years post-rhinoplasty, and just yesterday I noticed a red spot on the tip of my nose. Is it still possible to get an infection after three years? I’ve had no issues with my nose since the surgery, so this has made me quite worried. I had the procedure done in Korea, so getting a follow-up consultation with my surgeon isn’t easy. I’m hoping to get some clarity here. For now, I’m hoping it’s just a normal pimple that happened to form on the tip of my nose, since my rhinoplasty is long healed.

Hello and thank you for your question.

Although an exam in person is ideal, from your photographs alone, this subtle red spot may not be much of a concern.  Infections are rare in rhinoplasty, but are more common if a foreign body was placed like an implant -- silicone, goretex, mesh, etc.  Regardless, if the spot continues to linger, and redness develops and spreads, then you may have an infection that should be, at least initially, be treated with antibiotics.  If that doesn't improve, a small (cosmetic) incision can be made inside the lining of the tip of your nose to cleanse the area.  It is unlikely that you have a significant issue, but I would highly recommend an in-person evaluation by a board certified plastic surgeon.
