Removing dried blood around the grafts. How and when can I remove it without concern to the grafts????

Question

I am 10 days post op and have a few areas in the frontal area where 1200 grafts were placed. I have a few areas of dried blood that I am concerned about. How and when can I remove it without concern to the grafts????

By day ten the grafts should be healed sufficiently that you can be more aggressive washing your hair, using the balls of you fingers (don't pick at scabs with your fingernails).  Putting a wet washcloth on your head for 5-10 minutes before showering can help.  The the dried blood is thick and very adherent, call you surgeon and see if you can get a hair wash at the office.

No worries, it is about time to take a regular shower, let the shampoo for 3-5 minutes then rinse. You can do that twice a day and the grafts are secured after 10 days PO. For further questions contact your surgeon. Good luck.

You are safe to start removing the crusting and blood around the grafts.  After 7 to 8 days, the grafts are grafted.  I typically have my patients at this time massage off the residual scabs in and out of the shower.  A simple thing to do is to place some hair conditioner on the graft site and let sit for about five minutes, then get in the shower and gently massage (not pick) off the scabs.  Some of the scabs may be more adherent and you can work on those at a later time.  It may be a two day process.

Your doctor should have showed you how to clean off the scabs and crusts in the first day so that it never lasts as shown in the web reference below. Now you should wait a full two weeks, leave on a shampoo and conditioner for 10 minutes and then gently massage these grafts off with your finger tips
