I had an anchor lift with explant/total capsulectomy on 5/16. My surgeon did not mention silicone sheeting or paper tape for my incisions, but I have read how this can help. The current condition and size of my incisions scares me. I also have scabbing and fear tape would pull it off (causing significant bleeding). She said I could put anything on them at my last appt (5/20). I will not see her again, as I saw an out of town surgeon. Also, how do you apply the tape/sheets and for how long?

Hello,Thank you for your question, and attached images.I think that it is important as a plastic surgery patient to have a clear plan and understanding of how to optimize one's scars after surgery.  How your scars look and feel is a significant part of the value of your procedure.In the initial three to four weeks incisions are healing rapidly and are still somewhat vulnerable. Afterwards the rate of healing slows down till when fully healed by 9 to 12 months.  During this secondary phase (usually after the 6th week), and once cleared by their surgeon, one can then expect to begin such modalities such as scar massage, silicone gel sheeting.  Also very important for optimal healing is no smoking, sun protection, and good nutrition.One of the main goals to achieve on breast lift scars is that they, and the adjacent tissue to the incisions are supple, and softening well.  The redness associated with early scars typically fades over one to two years as long as not exposed to the sun.I hope this helps.Thank you,S.P. Thank you for the question.I would suggest that you check with your plastic surgeon for his/her preferences regarding incision line management.In my practice we use tape followed by silicone sheeting or silicone gel routinely.Best wishes.

Silver sulfadiazine cream will help with the softening and removal of the scabs. That should be used now. You will need a prescription, and you cannot be allergic to sulfa. After that my best suggestion is to use Avocet cream under Avogel pads to facilitate best wound healing. The avogel stuff is available on line. A lot of patients like to use" mederma", a silicone gel product available without a prescription.  Alternatives to this plan include a product called "embrace" which mechanically pushes the wound margins together, available only in dr offices. Truthfully, taping the wound for 3 -4 weeks works pretty well too.
