What Happens If Someone Gains Weight After Using Kybella?

Kybella is very effective at permanently removing fat cells from under the chin.  However, it is not intended to remove every fat cell.  The fat cells that remain can grow after weight gain, but the change would likely be less than after no Kybella treatment.

Kybella will permanently destruct fat cells in areas in which it is injected. If however, weight is put on after treatment, the existing fat cells will become enlarged and can result in submental fullness recurring. Once the weight is lost it should go back to how it looked after the treatment with Kybella. One caveat is that with weight gain and loss, this fluctuation can result in lost of elasticity in the skin and this laxity can add to the appearance of submental fullness, so must be considered. Ultherapy is wonderful for treating the laxity I mentioned for the neck, cheeks and jowls.

Kybella will offer a permanent fat cell reduction in the treated areas.  However, your remaining fat cells can expand with weight gain, and thus you may feel that some of the fullness returns.  If your weight remains stable, then you can enjoy lasting results.

Kybella is considered to be a permanent treatment to reduce submental fat under the chin. The way that it works is, after being injected Kybella destroys the fat cells and takes away their ability to accumulate and store fat. Your body discards the unused cells naturally through your metabolism. The results are expected to last permanently as long as you maintain your weight. If you gain weight, Kybella does not have the ability to stop your body from producing new submental fat cells. The weight that your body gains during pregnancy will most likely not make a huge effect on the results of Kybella because the weight gain is the temporary. If you return to your natural weight after your pregnancy, you should be able to continue to enjoy the results of Kybella.

The fat-destroying properties of Kybella are essentially permanent.  That said, just as in the case of liposuction or coolsculpting, if you gain weight, the weight gain will not be as significant in the treated areas.Best of luck!

Kybella is a form of a liver salt that is syntheic and works to damage fat cells when it is injected into them. In the clinical trials, 2 treatments a month apart had close to 50% improvement in fat reduction with some neck skin tightening/lifting (but this was a secondary outcome). More treatments, gave more improvement. In general it will take 4-6 treatments to get close to 75%+ improvement in most patients. There is pain and swelling during and after injection that can last a few hours to a few weeks/months. I suggest a formal consultation with a physician who is trained and speaks on neck rejuvenation, contouring and lifting. I am one of the few Kybella injection trainers and the majority of my practice is facial and body rejuvenation by fat removal surgical and non surgical options. Some people may benefit better from surgical lipocontouring and get more jawline and lower face improvement, as well as neck lifting, quickly -- within 3 days after the procedure. Kybella is not FDA approved to use in other areas other than the fat pad under the chin/submental area, and use in other areas could be unsafe. Again, please see an expert if you are considering treatment with this new medication. It does offer a great advance in our ability to reduce fat and contour the face. Only a select number of physicians will be injecting this medication at the beginning.
