Liposuction and lines of demarcation, I’ve read that spot treating the torso with liposuction in a single area can lead to lines of demarcation, but I’ve also read that VASER liposuction “ensures a smooth contour”. Does this imply that VASER liposuction is used to treat love handles and then the surrounding torso to some extent, or is spot treating just the love handles actually okay with VASER? Are there any better technologies (e.g., ones that treat a wide area rather than spot treatment) than VASER?

The technology with Vaser can leave a smoother result. 
Your only issue is that you will love the results of the treated area so much, that you are going to want to do more areas done in the future.

Liposuction was designed to remove localized fat repositories, rather than treat generalized obesity. As such, it is very effective in removing localized collections of unwanted fat. It is not the instrument that controls the result...it is the surgeon's skill. The experience of the surgeon is far more important than the instrument utilized. That being said, the Vaser instrument does cause a degree of skin shrinkage for a subtle skin tightening effect.
Visit a board certified plastic surgeon with considerable liposuction experience.
