Is it safe to get a keloid injected w/ Kenalog-40 one week before I am going to try to conceive?

The scar is small- just 1 sq cm, but I find that a large dose is the best way to flatten keloids permanently (the more they initially depress, the less visible they are once the tissue returns to normal). It is on the side of my stomach and I really want to get it injected before pregnancy stretches it out and perhaps irritates it further. Will the steroid stay local enough that it’s not a concern for a possible pregnancy in a week or do I need to skip the injection?

Yes, this shouldn't interfere with your ability to conceive. Keep in mind, keloids need a combination approach to get improvement with 5/FU steroids, lasers and microneedling/prp. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

The injection of your keloid with a relatively small amount of kenalog should not have any impact on your ability to conceive. There is no guarantee that one injection will treat the area as you may desire so you may want to consider waiting for the desired response and local result before trying to conceive.Steven Turkeltaub, MD
