How effective is accutane for folliculitis/acne on the butt?

Question

I’ve had some pretty bad facial acne and some pretty bad (and chronic) butt breakouts as well that are quite confident reducing. I’ve been on 80 mg of accutane for 6 months and my face acne has cleared up entirely (luckily no scarring!!), but I have seen little to no improvement on my backside. Should I stay on accutane if I can technically finish my course for my face? What other methods can i seek out? I really really just want to get rid of this folliculitis and any help is appreciated

Thanks for your question.  I am glad your face is clearing beautifully, but you are right, body acne and inflammation can be very stubborn.  You could consider continuing on a longer course of accutane, or maybe ask your dermatologist to do a culture on any pustules that are present on the buttocks - perhaps there is a bacterial folliculitis that needs to be treated separately.  Some of my patients with severe acne do well with a short course of prednisone in addition to the accutane to clear any resistant, deep set lesions.  Talk to your dermatologist and I am sure they will have some options for you.  Best of luck!

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, body acne can be more difficult to treat and may take more than one course of Accutane.
