Does your period affect the swelling from a liposuction procedure?

I had minimal liposuction done on my lower abdomen right above my scar line from a tummy tuck to get rid of some residual fat, along with a minor scar revision about three weeks ago. I get extremely bloated when I am on my period, which I am on now. Does the bloat affect the healing process at all? I know I had swelling for a week after the procedure and I felt like it was going down, but now I just look more swollen again. I am still wearing my compression garment 24/7.

Your period will mildly affect the swelling from liposuction.  Compression, diuretics and exercise all help to improve this.  Best, Dr. Emer.

I would guess that going through menstrualperiod In the early stages of liposuction convalescence might make for greater discomfort but this should not really have any significant effect on convalescence from the procedure itself.

women experience bloating around the time of their menstrual cycle.  This may be contributing to what you are
noticing.  For most women the bloating
will be gone after their cycle.  This
amount of bloating shouldn’t affect your healing; however the best doctor to
ask is your surgeon.  Follow up with them
to make sure your healing process is on track.

I am sure that your surgeon has told you that swelling can fluctuate and that it can take many weeks to months to see the full effect.  Continue with your compression and follow closely with your surgeon.  The previous tummy tuck may also be slowing down the resolution of swelling but  in time it will likely resolve.

Swelling is normal after surgery especially during a menstrual period. Eating salty food in the immediate postoperative period also will contribute to unwanted swelling or bloat. Wearing a compression garment can help some of the swelling. Joshua Korman MD
