I have had two Exilis treatments so far on my face and neck. I also have titanium screws and a dental implant. What is the risk?

My doctor never asked me before my first procedure if I had any dental surgeries or had any metal in my jaw or mouth. Upon doing more research I asked about it, and was not given a very clear answer. I had jaw surgery in 2003 where titanium screws were placed on both sides of my jaw and a dental implant was put in. My Exilis therapy has gone right over these areas. What are the potential risks here? Should this not have happened? Should I be worried?

Thank you for your question in regards Exilis treatment. The concern with any underlying metals close to the treatment area can heat up causing discomfort and possible damage due to the radio frequency. Since you have undergone two treatments so far without complications it would appear that you are fine. Although it is important to tell your provider that you have dental implants. To be sure what is best for you, see two or more board-certified providers in your area for a complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have treatment. I hope this helps.

It is recommended that a patient remove all metal, such as jewelry, prior to having an exilis treatment.  The concern is that the area near the metal may heat up too much.  Since you have had two treatments so far without problems, it shouldn't be an issue.  Tell your doctor about your concerns and ask if a barrier, such as cotton, should be inserted between your teeth and the inside of your cheek.  Best Wishes!!

Exilis can be done in most areas. However, the radiofrequency may heat up any underlying metal  in the body. Dental implants are generally not a problem but a silicone mouth gaurd may totally prevent any interference. Exilis is generally not done over any other metal implants in the face. If you have already had Exilis and had no problem so far than I would not be worried at all. I would warn the doctor or tech at your next visit to be sure they think this is an appropriate treatment for you.
