After a traumatic tooth extraction, does bone regrow or shrink during healing process in lower jaws?

It seems like most dentists recommend bone grafting procedure for dental implants done after tooth extractions. However, I've heard from few dentists that bone grafting is unnecessary in most cases where molar tooth is in lower jaw. Bone can regrow and become firm in some cases. Which one it true?
