Is a diuretic safe 10 days after surgery?

Question

I went to surgery at 111 lbs and out at 116.The weight was decreasing for a 3 days then shot back up.My doctor was adamant about not losing weight but I am very bothered because I have been eating reasonably. I know I'm being obsessive but I'm going crazy. Is it ok to take hctz to see if it's water weight? Or is it possibly stuck in the tissues?My last surgery I gained 5 lbs that never came off without strict diet but my surgeon says it will affect my breasts.Thank you for indulging a crazy girl

Maintenance of water after trauma such a surgery is a normal physiologic response. As long as they fluid retention is not excessive I would not prescribe a diuretic.

Please talk to your surgeon to find out if a diuretic is safe for you. Normally, I wouldn't advise it because your body will naturally work on reducing swelling. You can try cutting back on sodium, drinking plenty of fresh water and going to the washroom regularly, as well as leisurely move around to keep your circulation going.

Retaining water after surgery is normal. Unless excessive I would not recommend a diuretic. I would follow your plastic surgeons advise.

Generally, I do not find the use of diuretics necessary/ helpful in your situation.  On the other hand, their use can be potentially dangerous, given associated electrolyte alterations… Do not use any medications unless prescribed by your physician. Best wishes.

Water retention is normal after surgery and its the body's protective mechanism.  When the body feels it's appropriate it allows this water retention to normalize.  Diuretics on the other hand forces the body to get rid of water that it is not ready to do so.  When this fluid retention causes problems with lung function or hear function a diuretic is beneficial.  I would follow your plastic surgeons advice.
