Worried about dentures during and after facelift surgery. Any suggestions?

There should not be any issues continuing to wear dentures during and following surgery. As most of our facelift procedures are performed under local anesthesia, it is safe to leave your dentures in place. While you will experience some tightness of your jaw following surgery this should not create a problem with wearing dentures.

There is no need to worry about your dentures following a
facelift. They will most likely be removed during surgery, but they can be
replaced immediately afterwards. No one but your surgeon and his team has to
see you without them.

There's no problem with putting dentures back in the mouth and the recovery room after a facelift. They are removed during the case for the benefit of the anesthesiologist.

I usually have my patients wear their dentures during surgery if they fit well as it allows me to see the full effect of the facelift while I operate.

Without doubt, you should, at the latest, be able to wear your dentures the day after your procedure.  It actually has nothing to do with the procedure itself, but more with the type of anesthesia that will we administered.  If you are having general anesthesia or deep IV sedation, the dentures most likely will be needed to be removed temporarily (ie half a day).  If you are having your procedure only under local anesthesia, then you would not need to remove them at all.  This approach (local anesthesia with mild oral sedation) is how we perform our procedures in our Center (for over a decade).  We have had many patients like yourself whom have had the procedure without ever removing their teeth.  Hope this has been helpful. -Doc L.

If the procedure is done under local anesthesia, then you should be able to wear them throughout the procedure. If you are having a general anesthetic, you will be able to put them in before any loved ones see you. Good luck!

You should be able to talk this over with your anesthesiologist and nursing staff.  You can request to have your dentures available in the PACU so that they can be replaced.

This is up to your surgeon and anesthesiologist. However, I always like to leave the dentures in place if possible. Having the teeth in place maintains the fullness and position of the tissues of the lower face and without the teeth the oral cavity collapses. I also prefer IV conscience sedation anesthesia which would allow the dentures to remain in place. Discuss your options with your surgeon. Make sure you consult with an experienced facial plastic surgeon. All the best!
