Should the clinic have detected ankylosis before beginning extraction ?

From x-ray results, my problem tooth could have had root canal, but would have require additional work. (post, etc) Cost would have been similar to implant. So, I chose extraction with implant possible at later date. Tooth broke off during extraction prompting Doctor to have additional x-ray which showed ankylosis. She left tip of root in explaining that if it acts up at a later date, a surgeon would then be required for removal.
