Hello, I am planning on having the sliding genioplasty procedure, but I get nervous thinking about the possibility of asymmetry after the procedure. How often does asymmetry occur?

The chance of an asymmetry following genioplasty is minimal. Most surgeons use a method to mark the midline of the chin and use this measurement to keep the jaw aligned. The pre-stepped plates used today also help maintain the chin segment centered. Lastly, the soft tissue or skin and muscle overlying this area will prevent any small discrepancies of the bone to be noticed. Good luck.

It is safest to assume that some asymmetry is present after any sliding genioplasty procedure. It is only a question of its aesthetic magnitude as perceived by the patient. The reverse question to these concerns is how many sliding genioplasty patients go on to have a revision because of asymmetry which is probably in the 10% range.
