My doctor (MD) who administers my Botox is a trained Anesthesiologist, but has operated a med spa for quite a few years. My question is this: I am planning on getting Juvederm done for marionette lines and was wondering if my doctor is the best person to do this particular procedure? Although I trust my doctor, I am just a little nervous about the procedure.
Answer: Is it safe for another type of doctor/MD (an anesthesiologist) to administer Juvederm and Botox? Fillers are safe in experienced hands. However, the most experienced injectors tend to be Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists who trained in this field as opposed to Anesthesiologists who were trained to keep you asleep during surgery. State laws very widely and an Anesthesiologist injector might be legal in your state. However, he/ she was not trained on these procedures during residency and likely has far less experience with them than core physicians who have been using these products since their days in training and afterward. I hope this information is helpful for you.Stephen Weber MD, FACSDenver Facial Plastic Surgeon

Answer: A safe injector is really determined by their education and level of expertise. A safe injector is really determined by their education and level of expertise. In addition, you need to feel comfortable and confident with your injector. All the best.

Answer: Is it Safe to Have an Anesthesiologist Administer Botox and Juvederm? Thank you for asking a very pertinent question, because after years of diminishing reimbursement and the onset of the Affordable Care Act, many non-core Physicians are turning to aesthetic Medicine. There are no current laws restricting a licensed Physician from performing a procedure outside the scope of his/her specialty. In a hospital setting, a Physician can only perform a surgery or procedure that he/she has privileges to perform. Hospital privileges are granted based on training and specialty scope of practice. Although aesthetic procedures are well out of the scope of practice of an Anesthesiologist, minimally invasive aesthetic procedures do not require hospital privileges and there are no laws to restrict Physicians in this way. Although you probably aren't in imminent danger having this Doctor perform your procedures, it certainly isn't the best choice based on training and expertise. I would at least consult with a Facial Plastic Surgeon, Plastic Surgeon, Dermatologist, or Occuloplastic Surgeon who have better knowledge of facial anatomy, have training in facial aesthetics, and years of experience with neurotoxins and fillers. If you decide to go to this Medspa, make sure that the Juvederm and Botox you receive are FDA approved American products.

Answer: Juvederm and Botox injections. Any physician may treat a patient with Botox and fillers such as Juvederm, but why wouldn't you want the best trained, most experienced physician injecting you? The most successful results require a specialist with an artistic eye who understands facial anatomy and knows how to contour a face beautifully. A cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon will give you the best results.

Answer: Fillers Fillers in the face need a lot of knowledge of the facial anatomy and fillers require experience in injection technique and avoiding complications. Stick to doctors who practice within their field of expertise. Fillers are over used because many unqualified people are jumping on the bandwagon for money, not patient care.Samir Shureih MD.
