Do I have to have any significant comorbidities to be a candidate for VSG surgery.

Question

I'm over 35 BMI & under 40 (5'6 230lbs with NO comorbidities! I was will to pay out of pocket since insurance requires significant comorbidities!!

You can absolutely have a gastric sleeve. Be sure you are making an informed decision after considering the risks, benefits, and alternatives. There is no reason to deny a patient bariatric surgery with a BMI > 35 who has been unsuccessful with non-surgical options. Even if they don't have diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, etc.

Patients frequently tell me their story and then ask if they are a candidate for weight loss surgery; as if I am the one holding the keys to their health and happiness.  Yes, of course there are some guidelines... I wouldn't operate on someone who was 20 pounds overweight.  But if your BMI is above 30, and you WANT to lose weight and have tried everything else, and are willing to accept the risks of the surgery; they who are we as surgeons to turn you away?Your BMI is above 35.  Of course you can have the surgery!

In your case i think that you are a good candidate to do the gastric sleeve or other option. There a lot of evidence that patients with type 2 obesity who had a sleeve gastrectomy and others bariatric surgeries types without comorbidities, lost close to the 100 percent of excess weight, without complications.Bariatric Surgery in patients with your BMI is a safe and success procedure.God, Bless you and good luck
