IPL is a great treatment for facial rejuvenation. Hyperpigmentation may occur after a treatment or from melasma. In either case it can be treated with sunscreen and other topical products containing ingredients such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, retinoic acid, salivcylic acid, glycolic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, and hyaluronic acid. Hello,  If your dermatologist is concerned that you may be forming melasma or PIH after IPL, I would suggest that you apply a medical grade physical sunblock with a minimum SPF of 30 that contains zinc oxide a minimum of 3-4 times per day and start a hydroquinone or non-hydroquinone bleaching cream (discuss with your dermatologist) immediately.  Other factors besides the IPL that can exacerbate pigmentation include a history of melasma, hormone medications including oral contraceptives, abnormal thyroid tests, pregnancy and sun exposure.  Early treatment is essential if this is, in fact, melasma or hyperpigmentation.
