Risk of Trigeminal Neuralgia Flare After Midface Lift or Canthoplasty?
Hi, I’m considering a mid-face lift with possible temporal lift and canthoplasty, but I have some concerns and would really appreciate professional advice. I have a history of trigeminal neuralgia-type pain. In 2024, I experienced electric shock-like pain in my lower right jaw (mandibular branch). It was triggered and worsened by stimulants (fat burners/pre-workout), and also aggravated by brushing teeth and eating. I was treated with carbamazepine, and the pain completely resolved by September 2024. I’ve had no recurrence since. My MRI was clear in terms of the trigeminal nerve (no tumour or compression), but it did show some deep filler on the opposite side of my face, which doctors said was not related to the pain. I’m now stable, but I understand my nerve may be more sensitive than average. My questions are: • Does a mid-face lift / temporal lift / canthoplasty involve areas close to trigeminal nerve branches? • Is there a risk of triggering trigeminal neuralgia or nerve pain again after this type of surgery? • Would I be considered a higher-risk patient for nerve irritation? • Are there specific techniques or precautions surgeons use in patients with a history like mine? • Would you recommend avoiding combining multiple procedures at once in my case? I’m trying to understand whether this surgery is appropriate for me or if I should consider less invasive options first. Thank you in advance for your advice.
