Burning skin after tummy tuck? (Photo)

Question

I have a severe burning sensation and sensitive skin on my upper stomach under breast area only. I'm day 9 post op. It's on fire me the skin feels on fire and hot to touch... there is no visible redness or irritation. Is it the shearing rubbing from my binder, or is it an internal problem such as muscles not adhering to the skin? I'm slightly numb in the area too, but can feel the burning fire sensation. Is this normal? I old he checkup nurse today and she couldn't give me a direct answer?

Hi. Thanks for posting your questions.
It is common and expected that the skin on your abdomen will be numb after a tummy tuck, given the skin is lifted off the abdominal muscle during the procedure. The burning sensation sounds like neuropathic (nerve) pain, but this will have to be confirmed through a clinical examination with your plastic surgeon. This usually will resolve with time and healing; however, whilst it is troublesome, medication may help with alleviating symptoms.

Hello,Thank you for your question. Burning sensations on the skin can be common after liposuction and relate to nerve pain. If you do not see visual changes to the skin then this is likely however you should tell your surgeon and see them for a physical exam if you have ongoing issues. Usually after 14 days the swelling will resolve significantly and sensations of discomfort will lessen as well.All the best

For the burning sensation, you might try wearing a t shirt under the binder and using cold compresses. Please do not freeze your skin. With time, this burning sensation should slowly subside as your sensory nerves heal.
