Can patients with post herpetic neuralgia still have breast reduction?

I had shingles and am now dealing with the itching that follows. I have been told that the itching is from the nerves healing. I have been told also that it can be indefinite. Can patients with this condition still have surgery?

Thank you for your query. While the post herpetic neuralgia is still in its more intense and initial stages, I would recommend waiting before any elective surgery. Once things have settled down  and while you may  still have some minor symptoms, you can go ahead with a breast reduction procedure, especially if you have significant back and shoulder pain because of large, ptotic breasts. I would advise avoiding surgery until your symptoms resolve or at least stabilise. It is possible that the surgery itself or the bodily stress from the surgery and anaesthetic can cause a relapse. I would recommend getting advice from your family physician and consider taking anti-viral tablets in the build up to your surgery and for the immediate recovery phase to reduce the risk of a relapse.

It is still possible given that you have already recovered fully from the disease, however, with the case of nerve irritation, it is possible to develop a complication with sensation after a breast reduction as this surgery will severe your nerves even more. It would be best to schedule an appointment with a board-certified plastic surgeon for an in-person examination and a detailed discussion of the possibilities of a surgery.
