Does DUPA type hair loss typically manifest itself on the back and sides first instead of the typical pattern?

DUPA stands for Diffuse Un-Patterned Alopecia so you as the name suggest it is diffuse and it can happy everywhere. 

DUPA usually presents as a diffuse unpatterned hair loss. It is a loss of density rather than a complete hair loss. For this reason, it will not follow the usual Norwood or other patterns of hair loss. Treatment is similar to other androgenic alopecias however hair transplantation is contraindicated. DUPA is the short form for the term 'Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia.'  This is a subtype of hereditary hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia. About 2-6 % of men have this pattern of hair loss, so it is relatively uncommon.
DUPA usually presents itself on the sides and the back of the head at first, unlike male pattern hair loss (MPH), which typically occurs at the hairline and the crown. DUPA can even sometimes mimic the symptoms of male pattern hair loss (MPH) at first glance, but it soon differentiates itself by its rapid speed and unprecedented widespread distribution of hair loss.
Incorrect diagnosis of DUPA in men is unfortunate as it may lead to improper treatment. A scalp examination by a qualified dermatologist or full-time hair restoration surgeon is required to rule out other scalp pathology that may mimic DUPA. If the diagnosis is unclear a scalp biopsy may be needed. Understanding male balding patterns for the individual with hair loss will help to determine the right path to diagnose and appropriate treatment of the hair loss.

It’s certainly possible but be sure to see an expert for proper evaluation and diagnosis. DUPA is frequenty misdiagnosed.
