I am planning to have breast augmentation. I am concern about the history of PE i had during my second pregnancy. I was on blood thinner and later postpartum my haematologist did blood work to check if any factor missing causing clots. Reports cane clean and it was ruled that pregnancy was reason. I am concern as breast augmentation is surgery. Surgery may trigger clots. Please advice way forward.

Answer: Blood clots Safety is always the number one priority in surgery. Breast augmentation is not a surgery that is associated with a high risk of blood clots, but your previous PE does increase your risk. It is important to discuss your history with your plastic surgeon. Clearance from your hematologist may be indicated for you. In addition your surgeon may initiate preventative protocols during and after surgery to address your increased risk.

Answer: Blood clot and breast augmentation You are correct that you may be at higher risk of blood clot due to your previous PE, fortunately, your hematologist found that pregnancy was your greatest risk factor and not a clotting disorder. Surgery can trigger blood clots. The risk of blood clot with surgery does vary depending on the type of surgery and the length of the surgical procedure. Breast augmentation is not considered a surgery that is high risk for blood clots. With elective surgery, such as breast augmentation, there are preventative measures that can be put in place to help prevent blood clots, such as compression stockings, sequential compression devices and even blood thinners. Be sure to let your surgical team know about your past history and the clean report from the hematologist and they will ask you more questions about your clotting history and risk factors and see whether it is best to put any additional safety measures in place for you. Given what you've reported here on Realself, it is safe for you to go ahead. All the best to you, Dr. Nancy de Kleer
