Great questions. I think that a root canal and internal bleaching is your best option since if you did the veneers as the tooth darkens it would darken your veneer. Go as long as you can without veneers because your dentist is correct that the longevity on veneers is about 12-15 years. As you age, you most likely will need veneers and a root canal. Your question has two different concerns. If the natural tooth is getting dark it usually needs a root canal to preserve the tooth. This has nothing to do with the color of your tooth. Internal bleaching is one way to correct the color of a dark tooth, but it's results are unpredictable. You may or may not get the color transformation that you are hoping for. Veneers are more aggressive and involved but are predictable. With both bleaching and veneers there will be maintenance. Neither one lasts forever. My suggestion would be to try the internal bleaching after the root canal is completed. If you are happy with the results, that's great. If you don't get the results you are hoping for do the veneer.
