My melasma is getting darker/worse with the use of retinol. Is this normal for it to get worse before it improves? (photos)

I just started using the Rodan and Fields Reverse regimine. I have melasma and I've been using it for about 5 weeks. I have noticed in the past couple days that my melasma is getting darker and much worse than it was when I started this program. Is this normal that it gets worse before it gets better or should I discontinue use?
