What are the benefits of temple fillers?

I’ve noticed my temples have significantly hollowed as I’ve gotten older (I’m 44) and I think it’s what I’m seeing when I feel my face doesn’t quite look right but I can’t pinpoint how. What are the benefits of temple fillers, apart from contributing to a more youthful-looking face? Can they help give the appearance of a slimmer face? Will my face look wider with temple filler? Right now there’s a significant dip between cheekbone and side of forehead, like a peanut shape. Thank-you!

As we age, most of us lose volume in our face.  The volume loss can be seen in the skin, fat, muscle, and bone.  When our skin thins, it becomes crepy and we develop fine lines or valleys.  Fat loss can be seen underneath the eyes, cheeks, and temples.  For women, the temples have 3 important contributions to a youthful look.  First, it provides a soft more feminine shape.  The ideal shape is similar to an egg shape. If you lose volume in the temples, the shape of the head will look like a "peanut" shaped head which will look more aged.  Secondly, it helps to lift the outside portion of the eyebrow and eyelid.  If the temples are hollow, there will be more hooding of the upper eyelid and the eyes will look more droopy and closed.  Lastly, the temples help to lift the outer face which supports the face and helps prevent sagging of the mid and lower face.

The temple hollows with age and filling the area can have a very positive youthful benefit.  Popular fillers for this area are Sculptra, Radiesse, and more dense HA's such as Lyft, Volume, or Contour.

As we age, gravity brings our facial structures closer to the ground causing sagging skin and jowling. We also lose facial volume with age in the temples and cheeks. This is one of the reasons why cheek fillers may lead to a youthful appearance - by restoring lost facial volume. The temples hollow with age (and strenuous aerobic exercise), so adding filler volume to deflated temples may lead to a youthful appearance in some people. Hope this helps. Dr Joseph

Unfortunately there is little awareness out there about the benefits of temple fillers. They do improve the shape of the face because as we age, we become more "skeletal" looking which includes hollow temples. The added benefit to face shape is that it helps lift and open up the eyes/brows more too. It is a safe and effective treatment in trained and experienced hands (e.g. dermatologist), and will last about a year or so.

The use of filler in the temples will help improve overall facial shape and fill the dents you can see. Youthful faces tend to be triangular in shape. As we age our face looks more like an inverted triangle with narrower upper part and wider jawline. Temple fillers can make the face look more oval by widening the upper half, thus the face looks youthful and narrower overall, not wider. Temple filler also improves brow position and eye aesthetics.
