Swelling above and below tummy tuck incision. Is it normal?

I am 17 days post op from tummy tuck, muscle repair and Lipo for the past couple of days i have noticed that most of my swelling has localized to above and below the incision. It feels tender and swollen, not red I know that swelling is common after surgery, but is what I am describing normal?

It is very normal to have swelling above and below the incision, though if you have any concerns you should see your surgeon and address your concerns with he or she.  The swelling around the incision is part of the three layer closure most of us do and is very common.

Thanks so much for your question.  It is normal to have more localized swelling in that area.  After your surgery it takes months for your lymphatic system to repair itself.  The lymphatics are responsible for 15% of all the blood return to the heart so that is part of the reason why you stay swollen after the surgery.  However, you also want to make sure that you don't have a small hematoma, infection, or serum (fluid accumulation).  You should make an appointment to see your plastic surgeon and make sure they feel everything is ok.

Swelling above the TT scar is common during the first 3 months especially later in the day. This typically improves at night while sleeping and returns by later afternoon. follow up with your surgeon.
