Is numbness and warm skin to be expected one week out from Smart lipo in the chin and neck?

I had smart lipo performed on my chin and neck one week ago and just today removed my compression band. Sensation is returning to my face but not to the area under my chin. It is too sensitive to touch (more numb than painful) and is slightly warm. Should I be worried?

Inflammation accompanied by numbness and/or discomfort are common events following Liposuction. However, you should seek care immediately should you develop pain with redness +\- fever which are symptomatic of cellulitis. Hopefully you have been scheduled for a one week follow up visit with your surgeon. If your surgeon has shared a cellphone number with you, it is not unreasonable to voice your concerns directly with him/her. Hope this finds you well.

Yes, this can be normal after Smart Lipo. You may also have swelling, which can last 3-6 months after your procedure. To speed up healing, you can try adding hyperbaric oxygen, lymphatic massage, venus legacy or exilis radiofrequency treatments. To improve final results, we will often do a kybella and ultherapy about 4-6 weeks after neck liposuction to get more of an outcome. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Possible side effects after body contouring with Smartlipo™ include numbness, swelling and bruising. Typically, these are all temporary and should subside as your body heals. The warmness you describe is slightly concerning, as it may indicate a mild infection. Don't hesitate to check back in with your cosmetic surgeon if you have any concerns.

It is normal to have swelling and numbness after having smart lipo. You will also be sensitive when touching the area. Keep on eye on the warmth. If it gets red and hot, or you develop a fever , contact your surgeon.Best of luck!

It is normal to have swelling, bruising and numbness after SmartLipo. The skin can also feel a little sensitive and warm to the touch. Significant pain, fiery redness and skin that is very warm/hot to the touch are signs of an infection. As long as you don't have any of those symptoms there is no need to worry.

Some degree of numbness can certainly occur but warmth is a bit concerning as it raises the possibility of an infection. I strongly advise you to call your provider and get a followup visit as soon as you can.  Hope you feel better!

you will continue to improve for 6 months after Smartlipo. the numbness often goes away in weeks but it can last for a few months.i personally disagree with the suggestion below. i don't think it is necessary to do Kybella after Smartlipo. Almost of the time, you will get a better fat removal from Smartlipo than Kybella and also better skin tightening. i don't see any point in spending any extra money for Kybella in most cases. although there is certainly nothing wrong with doing lymphatic massage, i think for a smaller area like the neck, this is much less necessary or helpful, though it certainly will not hurt. david berman md
