Did I take my drains out too early?

Some surgeons do not use drains.  The ones that do leave them in for variable lengths of time.  I leave mine in for 1 week.  If the fluid is leaking out of the drain exit sites put dry gauze on them to collect the fluid.  If you feel an increase in size or the breasts get hot or you feel ill, you probably have accumulation of fluid that needs to be evaluated and addressed.

It is not uncommon to remove drains 4 days after breast reduction surgery.  Most surgeons use a cut off for the amount of fluid that is coming out of them as to when to remove them.  If you have an concerns about fluid building up you should contact you surgeon and se them in person so they can examine you. Indeed, if you had a strait forward primary breast reduction, removing them 4 days after your surgery is no problem. In my practice, I selectively use drains. If in the rare case you feel like there is a fluid collection, then you need to see your plastic surgeon.

It should be fine to remove drains only 4 days after surgery.   Many surgeons do not use them at all for reductions and evidence-based studies do not support their use.  As long as you do not notice increased swelling in one of your breasts with increased pain, you should be fine. 

If you are draining fluid after removal of drains and it has been several days since removal( in your case about a week), you might want to touch base with your surgeon to be evaluated.

Didn't your doctor remove them.  I would think that since most of the time they are sutured into position he would remove them.  If he told you they could be removed then I would be comfortable with that but if you are concerned about fluid buildup why not see him sooner.
