6 months post-op free nipple graft. Is it possible to have an infection after all this time?

I had a BREAST reduction and free nipple graft 6 months ago. Everything healed fine. Now for about the last ten days one nipple is extremely sore, looks swollen (not just erect) and at times it feels warm to th touch. I get a sharp zing sensation occasionally on only this side. Is it possible for it to be infected after all this time? Or even for the graft to be lost?! My surgeon has since retired and I am at a loss...

Yes an infection is possible at any time. With the symptoms you mentioned I would make an appointment to see your plastic surgeon as soon as possible.

Your breast sounds infected from the sound of your description. You need
 to schedule an appointment with a local surgeon ASAP before things get 
worse. A diagnosis can't be made without an exam.

Nipple grafts can be sore long after surgery.  It should be looked at by the plastic surgeon.  Sometimes it will require topical treatment of one type or another. You should not lose the graft at this time.

Thank yourfor your question but it really requires anexamination to be certain.  It may represent a late stitch abcess but that would require an examiination to determine.  That said I would not worry about losing your graft as at this late date it is safely recieving blood supply from the underlying tissue.Dr. Corbin
