I have a question regarding my lips. I had an accident 8 years ago that left scar tissue in my bottom lip. My lips are uneven due to this and I hate my smile. Is a filler a good route to go? Or is there anything else that could be route of removing the scar tissue?
Answer: Lip Augmentation Candidate -- Injectable Fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Volbella), Fat Grafting to Lips, NovaThreads for Lift I would highly recommend getting a formal evaluation with and treatment from a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and expert in facial sculpting. Technique is the key to a successful lip augmentation with fillers, so you'll want to see someone meticulous. An experienced physician will be able to determine which filler, how much filler, and which technique will give you the subtle result you're looking for. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Answer: Intralesional Anti-Inflammatories Can Help Shrink Bulky Scars Before jumping to fillers, you might wish to discuss the use of intralesional triamcinolone, an anti-inflammatory used for shrinking bulky scars of all kinds, in varying amounts and concentrations. This would be a simple, relatively inexpensive and quick first approach. Best of luck.

Answer: Lip augmentation Dear Shannonlora, I perform a lot of lip injections with fillers such as juvederm and it works great. Many times I need to put more in one side than the other to attempt to even out the vermillion border (The red line of the lip). This helps provide more symmetry at times. For patients looking for a more long lasting result, I recommend fat grafting. That is, using your own bodies fat to make your lips naturally look more shapely. The bonus is that the results last many many years. In general, I avoid using permanent prosthesis because I find that the lips are such dynamic and sensitive structures, the end result is not natural. Answer: Lip scar revision When it comes to treatment options it’s important to first and foremost make an accurate diagnosis. In your case the primary problem is most likely a misalignment of tissues or scar tissue contraction or a combination of both. It’s possible volume place some role but it’s probably not the primary issue at hand. Doing a scar revision with an attempt to get better realignment or simply excised the scar tissue may or may not give improvements justifying having the procedure. You can certainly talk to plastic surgeons about working with fillers and try it if you would like. This really is going to require a careful assessment with an examination. I suggest scheduling a few in person consultations with local experienced board-certified plastic surgeons. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
