I just got my cast taken off and stitches cut. The nurse came in and took out my stitches from under my nose, but she also cut off two very small stitches from the sides of my nose. I didn't think much of it until I got home. I haven't seen any photos of anyone with these. I'm curious as to why they are there. What part they play in the procedure. Could someone explain please? I've included a picture circling the two stitches.

Answer: Stitches after surgery Thanks for your question. Many rhinoplasty surgeons use a transcutaneous approach for osteotomy when needed. Some surgeons leave these tiny skin punctures to heal on their own. Others place a single small stitch there for a couple days. Double check with your surgeon to clarify what the sutures in your specific case may have been from. Warm regards.

Answer: What were these two stitches on the sides of my nose used for? Those stitches are likely where your surgeon used an instrument called an osteotome to help move in the bones (via osteotomies). To bring in the bones, they are "broken" along a certain line by the osteotome. Most surgeons do not make an incision on the outside, while others do. There are strengths and weaknesses to each approach. Following your doctor's instructions on the care of the incisions will help in the healing process!
