Red matted spider veins. Will the matting ever go away? (Photo)

Question

I had my spider veins treated with scalortherapy (sp). After the treatment, it left matting. I was told the only way to get rid of this was by laser treatment. However, the laser treatment blistered and scared my skin my question is, will the matting ever go away?

Thank you for the question. Matting is a potential side effect of sclerotherapy. Fortunately, it is known to spontaneously resolve within months. I would recommend waiting at least 6 months after treatment before considering any repeat treatments. Then, if you don't observe any improvement, make sure to alert your plastic surgeon to your concerns. 
An in-person exam with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the best way to assess your needs and obtain expert medical advice. Best of luck!

Thank you for your question. This is called telngiectatic matting and can occur after the inflammatory process of sclerotherapy or cosmetic laser procedures. Most importntly, the literature shows that this resolves spontaneously withint a year following it's development. I would NOT spend any money to relaser or retreat this area as your body will help resolve most of it on its own.You can support the process by placing a horse chestnut based cream over the area. One such product is called Omega Vein Cream (see link below). I am not suggesting that this aescin based cream will get rid of this process. Aescin based cream reduce inflammation in vein structures which would reduce the likelihood of this matting process to get worse.

Consider a visit to a specialist who you can trust to help you make an informed decision on the best choice of treatment for you in this case. Sometimes treated areas with sclerotherapy may cause micro veins to appear a side effect known as matting like you mentioned. If this happens, it can also be treated with another sclerotherapy session for more adequate cosmetic results.
