Lips super swollen after Restylane. I have been icing and using Vaseline for moisture. Any advice? (photo)

It can take 1-2 weeks for final results with fillers. Icing, arnica and cold compresses can give improvement. If you're unhappy with your final results, you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Dear qcianfichi,dermal fillers have a significant swelling post injection. I would follow up with you plastic surgeon but typically I tell all my patients to wait a full two weeks.  Generally at 2 weeks they are happy and glad they didn't dissolve. Daniel Barrett, MD, MHA, MS

I appreciate your concern.Your swelling appears pretty typical for most fillers on day 1. I suggest rest, icing, and possibly Arnica. You should always discuss these concerns with your injector. See my video link below.Good luck. Dr. ALDO

Thank you for your question. It is common to have some swelling and bruising 1-day post lip injections with dermal fillers and can take up to 2 weeks to resolve. You can help reduce swelling by icing the treated area. Also, it is advisable to avoid NSAID’s such as ibuprofen as they tend to thin the blood and increase bruising and swelling. Restylane and Juvederm are basically equal in their potential to create bruising or swelling in the lips.  The lips are prone to swelling with any type of injection.  The swelling will go down on its own.  Lightly ice the lips for now, and contact the physician who did your injections to notify them of your concern.

Swelling and bruising are by far the most common side-effects experienced after lip-fillers. The swelling generally resolves after 48 hours on average, but can take up to two weeks to settle fully. Simple pain relief with paracetamol may be of benefit, but avoid anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin that can worsen bruising. Icing the area can also help. If you are concerned about the amount of swelling, you should contact your cosmetic practitioner to arrange a review at an early stage. If the swelling does not resolve you may wish to consider having the filler dissolved but I would advise most clients to wait two weeks before considering this, as by then the swelling has mostly subsided.
