My breast are hard and swollen after fat transfer to breast; is this normal?

I had a fat transfer to my breasts 3 and a half weeks ago. My breasts are swollen and painful. My doctor said this is normal, since there is no redness. However, they're also hard. Everything I've read online so far tells me that recovery from fat transfer is easier. This has not been the case for me. My donor area is healing nicely. My breasts still hurt and are still very swollen and hard. Is this normal? How long do I have to wait for my breasts to start softening?

Thank you for your question. During the post-operative period the breast are swollen, and the breast appears in a much higher position. Over time as the swelling goes down and the non-viable fat gets absorbed, the breasts return to more stable position and definitely softens. It may take several months for this to happen and can be encouraged with breast massage and compression. I would continue to follow up closely with your surgeon.

It depends upon how much fat was transferred and healing process in general. It is still a surgical procedure, so there will be some discomfort. Anything unusual warrants close follow up with your plastic surgeon.
