In my opinion, clobetasol works well for Alopecia areata, scarring Alopecia, and traction Alopecia. It is not the treatment of choice for androgenic Alopecia. As you did not state your diagnosis, I believe it's important to recognize that clobetasol does not work for all alopecias. A anti-inflammatory like clobetasol is helpful when there is a degree of inflammation in the scalp. Because of the potential of side effects, limiting usage is necessary.
Topical corticosteroids are useful to treat alopecia areata (an autoimmune form of hair loss where you get circles of bald spots). You should not be using this without monitoring. If you were given a prescription for it, you should be checking in with your dermatologist by the end of two months at the longest.
Clobetasol can be used for a few months provided a) you are under care of a specialist who can follow you and b) you do take breaks every now and then (ie clobetasol-free periods) and c) you to not exceed the doses your physician has recommended.A variety of protocols are used and all generally include periods of time off clobetasol. When used properly though clobetasol can be very helpful in alopecia areata.
When you are treated with alopecia areata, your dermatologist builds a Master Plan for you which may include this steroidal cream. Long term use may cause absorption of the steroid which is never good.
