Existing mole has crusty wart-like surface

Question

Have had a normal round raised brown mole on my arm for many years approx 6mm diameter. Recently the surface has become crusty like a scab, now has wart like appearance. It has not grown and does not itch or hurt. GP says doesn't think anything sinister but have been referred to dermatology. Can a normal raised mole crust over like this without being malignant?

Thank you for your question. Moles can change over time and become more raised, dry, or change colors. However, there are other benign lesions that occur with age that mimic moles and can have a wart like appearance, which are called seborrheic keratosis. I agree with your GP and highly recommend you consult with a board certified dermatologist to have your lesion evaluated. Take care and good luck.
