The amount of deviation of the septum alone does not usually determine if you require surgery or not. The need for surgery is determined by a combination of the amount of deviation along with your symptoms. Septal deviation along with symptoms like nasal congestion, runny nose, bleeding, or pain should be considered together. Some patients with 2-3 mm of deviation may have many symptoms. Other patients with the same amount of deviation may have no symptoms. The main goal of septum surgery is to improve your symptoms. I recommend discussing all of your symptoms as well as your deviation with your doctor. That will best determine whether surgery is a good option for you.
