Below is a review article about microneedling, with a long list of references. While a lot of the studies focus on acne scars, new advances and uses continue to develop. I personally feel it has a great effect on fine lines and wrinkles, stimulating collagen, and a refreshed appearance.Good luck,Dr. Powell
Peer reviewed evidence is important in regard to credibility. However, even "peer reviewed" studies may have their own biases and, in fact, could be quite misleading. The conclusions do not always match the data provided so one must have some skills in order to determine whether or not a peer reviewed article is actually worthwhile. Regardless of the studies that are published in quality medical journals, one must also learn to decipher anecdotal stories about the procedure itself. I know people expect results with microneedling and the expected results may indeed interfere with a non-biased opinion about its effectiveness. The same holds true for doctors who offer microneedling. Based upon what I have seen with my own eyes, the procedure does seem to offer benefit for wrinkles and scarring. Your dermatologist is correct in telling you that there is little evidence, in regard to scientific studies, indicating that microneedling works. However, there is also no evidence to support the stance that it does not work. You can't have it both ways! If there was a study proving microneedling does not work, I'm sure most doctors would cease using it, but that has not happened to date. I believe it will be shown, scientifically, that it does work, but that retrospective study has also not been done yet. As you can see, it is simply a matter of opinion at this point with some waiting to see if it is proven to work before offering it in their practice.
Microneedling can be done after any type of filler injections as long as the area is not swollen or bruised. Thank you for your question
Yes, most definitely! Microneedling creates discrete wounds using a specialized tip containing motorized thin needles which prick the skin surface to stimulate growth of new collagen - a process called collagen induction therapy. During treatment, tiny blood vessels get pierced,...
Thank you for your question. You didn’t submit a photo, and state you’re going to undergo microneedling and PRP. You’re asking if it’s okay to do other procedures like Hydrafacial in between these treatments. I can share with you my guidance to my patients in assessing what their needs are, an...
Latest ASDS Guidelines Task Force Dermatology Surg. 2017, May 2017 shows no evidence of delayed wound healing, especially at the 5 month mark. All I can do is to reassure you of the evidence that you will be ok. For more information, this journal paper is available to the public. Rest easy, I ...
For maximum RF Microneedling results, a series of 4 initial treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is recommended. Maintenance treatments are advised to be 1 per season with a minimum of 2 per year. These recommendations should allow for maximum results for improved appearance of fine lines a...
Microneedling may not help too much with deep wrinkles around the mouth and forehead. Deep wrinkles around the mouth may be effectively treated with a fine small particle filler such as Restylane silk or Belotero, in addition to a smoothing laser such as Fraxel or Active FX or a chemical...
