Is this common?I only drink white wine. My husband has had 17 surgeries some of them serious and not one surgeon ever mentioned this to him. Other types of alcohol are permitted. My research does not seem to support this. Do you recommend this to your patients?

Answer: Not an uncommon recommendation Grapes, raisins, and wine are commonly on the foods to avoid list. Cucumbers, oranges, tomatoes, curry, vinegar, and many types of berries also can cause bleeding during surgery. Your surgeon likely gave you this recommendation in order to decrease bleeding risk. I tell my patients the same thing and know many plastic surgeons that say the same thing. I also attached a link to a good source on many common supplements that should be avoided. Good luck with your upcoming surgery!

Answer: Abstaining from grapes preop This is a new one on me after 30 years in private practice. I advise patients to abstain from drinking alcoholic beverages preop but grapes alone? Request a clarification. Best wishes.
