Laser treatment under eyes. Can it destroy fat cells and create hollowness?

Is it possible that laser under eyes besides tightening the skin can destroy some of fat cells and create a hollowness? Thank you Lana

Laser does not destroy fat cells

The laser settings are predetermined and usually penetrate only 100 microns. The heat is localized and has no effect on the fat. There will be redness for a few days to weeks. It is best to discuss your concerns with your surgeon.

Lasers under eyes will not destroy fat cells or create hollowness.

Lasers under the eyes will not destroy fat cells or create hollowness. What does create hollowness is surgical removal of fat pads.

Laser treatment under eyes. Can it destroy fat cells and create hollowness?

Hollowing under the eyes is a normal form of the facial aging process that is determined by genetic factors. Skin lasers generally penetrate only to the level of the dermis in the skin and do not penetrate to the fat underneath.

Laser treatment and hollows

Resurfacing lasers, even the most aggressive, are designed to penetrate only as deep as the mid-reticular dermis to stimulate new collagen formation. This means that the laser does not even penetrate the full thickness of the skin. In order to affect deeper fat cells, damage would need to extend into the subcutaneous layer and deeper tissue planes of the lower eyelid and infraorbital region.

That was a long-winded build-up to the answer to your question: no, fat should not be altered during laser skin tightening. Hope this helps!

Laser treatment under eyes. Can it destroy fat cells and create hollowness?

Typically laser treatments with a fractional CO2 laser will not destroy fat cells and create hollowness in the eyelid area.

I hope this helps.

Laser Treatments and eye - Ematrix, Fraxel, Chemical Peels

All of these non-invasive treatments for under the eyes should make the fine lines look better and create a beautiful under eye.  You are not removing volume so it should have no effect in that area.  Please be certain to consult a board certified dermatologist with expertise with these lasers for this advanced technique.  Best, Dr. Green
