Can 5 hours of twilight sedation for a facelift cause hair texture to thin out/dormant follicles?

Twilight sedation can cause telogen effluvium.  It can be seen with any type of surgical anesthesia. Telogen effluvium can unmask an androgenic alopecia or an age-related hair loss. Furthermore, it is common with facelift surgery  involving incisions in the hairline to have thinning postoperatively. I believe this is a pressure or signaling phenomenon. It is most often seen in the area behind the ears and frontal hairline when a brow lift is  performed. We have utilized PRP to successfully reverse post-operative changes. Good luck.

I’ve seen many patients this past year alone with telogen effluvium from twilight sedation. Some recover really well by doing nothing - and some accelerate their underlying genetic hair loss. To me it does not matter if there is a family history or not and whether AGA is clinically apparent or not. All that matters is what is actually the correct diagnosis at this point. See an expert for dermatoscopic examination, blood tests +/- biopsy (if needed).

I don't believe that twilight sedation can cause hair thinning or hair loss; however, if you were stressed for this surgery, stress can precipitate genetic hair loss if you have the genes for hair loss
