Question

hi, is it normal to have red eyes in the outer corners five weeks postop? In addition, my lower part of the irises are not covered on my left eye and I feel there are some asymetries - is it possible to make small tweeks to correct this (in a few months time not now) or would i need a complete redo? I can close both my eyes. But I look all the time as if I had not slept. Thank you

Thank you for your question and images. It is not unusual to still have redness and swelling. I see from your images that you still have some conjunctival swelling both on the inner and outer parts of the eyes. It can take weeks and months for eyelids to settle after surgery, particularly after canthoplasty. It is important to keep your eyes moist and protected with regular and frequent lubrication. Continue to followup closely with your surgeon and remain patient. There is nothing to do at present and small tweaks and changes can always be made in the future. RegardsDr Guy Watts

You are still healing and should give it 3 months for full healing. Communicate with your surgeon any concerns. There are nonsurgical measures that can be done now such as massaging. If the problem persists after healing, then revision eyelid surgery can be considered.

Redness is normal as is asymmetry at 5 weeks. Sometimes a stitch placed right at the outer corner can rub on the eye and cause irritation of the eye so you may want to check in with your surgeon.  You can’t see it from the outside but it maybe on the inside. It’s easy to remove if needed. The asymmetry should improve over the next few months. Best of luck.

Thank you for sharing your experience.  It appears that you have chemosis - swelling of the conjunctiva - which is completely normal at this point after canthoplasty.  Make sure that your surgeon is aware of your condition and consider a consultation with a board certified oculoplastic surgeon to check the health of your eyes.  Good luck!

Based on your photos, there is a small retraction of the lower eyelids but that can be seen at 5-6 weeks after surgery and often reverses as the scar resolves.  Be patient and let the healing process take place.  If after 4-6 months, you still have that issue, it can be fixed but first you need to let the full healing take place.  Use some artificial tears drops during the day and ointment at night to help the redness !
