Are there different brands for Botox?

Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin that is used for cosmetic purposes. Two other brands are Xeomin and Dysport. All three brands of botulinum toxin can relax the dynamic muscles that cause wrinkles. In addition, 3 more types of “Botox” will be approved by the FDA in the next few years. All of these formulations differ slightly, so that some patients respond better to one than to the other. However, most will do well on any of them. Please consult with board-certified dermatologists who are experienced with neuromodulators when you are traveling; successful and flattering wrinkle control with botulinum toxin takes a great deal of expertise and skill.

Botox is one brand name — and probably the best known brand name — for a form of purified, injectable botulinum toxin that can be used to relax dynamic muscles and smooth out wrinkles. Two of the other highly effective FDA-approved neuromodulators used for cosmetic purposes are Xeomin and Dysport. Most patients will respond well to any and all of the three. With the popularity of botox, people can forget that botox is not the type of procedure but simply a brand of neuromodulators (similar to how people tend to call different brands of bandages bandaids, & tissues a kleenex, etc). Botox is one of the brands of the products that are used relax overactive muscles. When referring to Botox, you are referencing to a brand.  There are 3 brands of neuromodulators that treat the crow's feet, forehead and brow lines.  Those brands are Botox, Dysport and Xeomin.  All 3 work to relax the muscles of the face, and for the most part offer similar results.  Some patients may have more success with one over another and therefore want to stick with what works for them.  If you have a preference, it's best to ask your injector which product they are using as not all injectors offer this information up front.Best of luck,Dr. Philip Solomon, Solomon Facial Plastic, Toronto, Canada

There are currently 3 FDA approved brands.   Botox Cosmetic (made by Allergan), Dysport (made by Galderma), and Xeomin (made by Merz Aesthetics).   In our practice - we carry all three brands and find them similar in efficacy and longevity.   It's similar to looking for ibuprofen and there are several brands (Motrin, Advil, etc....)   We price them all the same and will use whatever brand the patient has a preference for.   Please note that if you look on-line - you can always find somebody who will promote one brand as being better than another.   The drug companies have a strong marketing presence.  More important than the product is the the injector as there are variables in placement, concentration and pricing.   Think of it as getting a haircut from 3 different stylists.   They all use the same kind of scissors.   Would you blame a bad or good haircut on the scissors?   No - it's the person taking care of you.   Same thing with botox injections.   It's not necessarily the product brand but the injector.

Thank you for the question.   In the USA, there are three brands of botulinum toxin available, Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin.  As far as I'm concerned, they're all equivalent as far as effect goes.  I offer all three so that my patients get a choice.  Good luck! 

Yes, there are different brands.  Botox by Allergan is the original product approved and usually takes about 5 days to work.  Dysport was developed later and basically works the same way. Because it is a competitor, it is priced a little cheaper. This usually takes effect in 24 hours. Once my patient decides on a product (even if they want to try  both over time), then I continue with the same product if possible, so in case it stops working for them in the future, we can switch to the other product. I am happy with both products. 

Botox is the Brand name belonging to a class of pharmaceuticals call neuromodulators.  In the U.S. there are two competitive brands which are Xeomin and Dysport.  Each of the competitive Brands (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport) are made by different companies and each purport to have some specific advantage.  I generally find all the products relatively equal in efficacy.  When you go to your doctor keep in mind that Botox is not the name of a procedure but rather the name of a specific product, so if you want Botox simply ask for Botox.  All the products will give you similar results and it is most important to focus on the experience of the injector.
