Could a dental problem be a possible cause of filler infection?

Five months ago, I developed an infection in my left cheek from Voluma. It seems to be resolved. Went to dentist today. X-rays reveal a problem with an upper molar on left side of mouth, over which I have a crown. Doc believes tooth might be dying and/or slightly infected. Am going to specialist for further evaluation. Could bacteria/mild infection in this tooth have caused my Voluma infection? If so, I assume it will do so again, were I to risk fillers in the future and not treat the tooth?
