Dear Chris1993 in Nashville; There are two points worth understanding. First, there are several reasons you may not have considered.Regarding your question, “What makes a surgeon accountable if something goes wrong if they already have your money?” That's the first time I have ever seen that question posed and a very wise question it is. it's a one-word answer: Integrity. Ethical surgeons -- and the great majority are -- are obliged morally and by the traditional ethics of the profession to stand with the patient regardless of what happens, and there is no additional charge for this service. It is very important that you feel comfortable with the surgeon because, if you feel the surgeon is not conscientious, attentive and likely to not bolt in case of a problem, then you are in the wrong office. That's why consultations are very important, particularly since you need to gauge the personality and attitude of the surgeon. The consultation is a very important personal interaction in which you are about to engage. Patients are relaxed and comfortable when the operation is scheduled and that all arrangements have been made because they have paid for the procedure. In a sense, it is not unlike other transactions in life. You engage a service and plan on the service and expect that the service is fulfilled. Best wishes, Robert Kotler, MD, FACS
