Why does one of my nipples only get hard and stick out?

My right nipple gets hard and sticks out like normal when it's cold or my boyfriend touches it and stuff but my left nipple just stays soft or only gets hard a little and still doesn't come out all the way..

Sometimes, one or both nipples can be inverted.  They are tethered by the breast ducts so they don't stick out.  A photo would be useful.  If it is an inverted nipple, it can be fixed by a simple in office procedure.
